Join us in the CMAG theatre, to hear The Blade curator Richard Heathcote cut through the sward of myth and mystery to reveal how lawn grass became the most ubiquitous plant in twentieth century gardens; how the lawn mower democratised its use in gardens and how Australian landscape architects, gardeners and even politicians have used turf for design and environmental purposes. After the talk, visit the exhibition, considering the exhibits with an informed, perhaps nostalgic eye.

Richard Heathcote is Director of Benefaction at Carrick Hill historic house and garden in Adelaide, after holding the position of Director for several years. He previously managed Rippon Lea Estate, the National Trust’s flagship property in Melbourne, for a decade. He is also the immediate past Chair of the Australian Garden History Society’s National Management Committee and prior to COVID-19, Richard led tours for ASA Cultural Tours. He presented ABC TV’s The New Eden – a six-part series tracing the evolution of the Australian garden, and has broadcast and published on heritage buildings and gardens. Richard is passionate about making art accessible to everyone and has curated exhibitions featuring the extensive collection of British and Australian paintings at Carrick Hill.
