HELP CMAG ACQUIRE MAREE CLARKE’S REED NECKLACES 2025

From October 2025 we are seeking support for the acquisition of two breathtaking Reed Necklaces, made in this year, by Yorta Yorta/Wamba Wamba/Mutti Mutti/Boonwurrung multi-disciplinary artist Maree Clarke. Clarke has created the exquisite exhibition Seeing the Invisible, inspired in part by the Ginninderra Reed Necklace 1862, on display in the award winning Canberra/Kamberri, Place & People exhibition at CMAG.

Once gifted as signs of safe passage and friendship, Clarke’s super-sized Reed Necklaces reimagine traditional river reed necklaces on a breathtaking scale and include blown and cold worked Murrini glass, made by skilled artisans at Canberra Glassworks. The dappled veins within the Murrini glass elements, reference the invisible structure of reeds which Clarke has investigated through microscopic photography. The rich tones of blue reflect the importance of waterways as life giving pathways through country.  The other elements, made by Clarke and her family, demonstrate Clarke’s ongoing commitment to cultural collaboration. The final works are displayed as monumental, suspended installations referencing the beauty and significance of traditional adornments, while acknowledging the deep loss of land, language, and cultural practices experienced by First Nations people.

Striking in beauty and rich in cultural, artistic, and local significance, Maree Clarke’s Reed Necklaces 2025 celebrate Southeast Australian Aboriginal heritage. Created collaboratively  with Canberra Glassworks and informed by time spent with local custodians and Caring for Country Rangers at Ginninderry, they foster dialogue, education, and community connection.

Their acquisition will enhance CMAG’s collection with a major work by an internationally acclaimed artist—ensuring public access now and for generations to come. Deeply rooted in Canberra, the works reference the historic Ginninderra Reed Necklace 1862, Clarke’s local residency and research, and her collaboration with local makers—adding powerful relevance and resonance.
