There is a longstanding history of visual artists and designers collaborating with theatre practitioners to produce exceptional works for the stage. This synergy across creative disciplines is essential, bringing together a blend of perspectives and skills to make truly compelling live performances.
Join some of Australia’s leading artists, designers, and performance makers as they discuss their experiences working in theatre and the process of creating a ‘total work of art’. Drawing on the notable partnership between Sidney Nolan and choreographer Robert Helpmann for The Display, 1964, panellists will reflect on the elusive and mercurial nature of live performance, exploring the challenges and rewards of bringing artistic visions to life.
Discussions will include First Nations perspectives, the evolution of design technologies, and innovative approaches that push the boundaries of what a ‘stage’ can be.
Presented by Canberra Museum + Gallery in association with Canberra Theatre Centre and supported by Creative Australia, the Australian Government’s Arts Funding and Advisory Body.
