Ongoing throughout 2025

Gifted to the people of Australia by Sir Sidney Nolan in March 1975, this nationally significant group of 24 early paintings includes renowned works from the ‘Ned Kelly’ series. Over the years, Nolan added 194 more pieces, bringing CMAG’s custodianship to over 218 works.

In 2025, a 12-month specialist conservation program will undertake technical analysis and repairs of support and paint layers, surface cleaning, and the fabrication of new brass frames. Analysis of the Collection will expose undiscovered nuances in Nolan’s techniques, reveal underpainting layers, and uncover evidence of the Collection’s extensive exhibition history prior to 1975.

This essential project will ensure the longevity of the Nolan Foundation Collection, enrich our understanding of Nolan’s techniques, and allow access to Sidney Nolan’s legacy for the people of Australia for the next 50 years.

As custodian of Nolan’s legacy, CMAG is committed to preserving these masterpieces for the benefit of all Australians. This important project would not be possible without the ongoing support of the Australian and ACT Governments, whose annual commitment ensures we can continue to fulfil our obligations as custodians of this historically and culturally important collection.
